Rickey Point

Honest John Rickey was an early settler who came to the area in 1866.  Like many others, he tried his handRickey Point at mining but eventually decided to combine farming and merchandising.  He was the first to have a steamboat on the Columbia River.  It went from Rickey Rapids - that went past this spot - to Spokane.  He also had cargo canoes that visited the Native and white settlements along the river (also a first).  He made friends with the natives, the Chinese prospectors and the other settlers.  He hired natives to work his orchards along the river.  (More about that in the next stop, Rickey Creek Orchard.)
In 1887 John Rickey was elected treasurer of Stevens County and in 1892 he constructed the largest building in the county for a store.  It is now called the "Barman Building" and houses an antiques store and a barber shop at 230 South Main in Colville.  The bay just north of Rickey Point is the anchorage for the Rickey Point Sailing Club.
If you are ready for a break, just north of Rickey Point Rd on the east side of Highway 25 is Riverview Orchards with fresh fruits in season, freshly roasted coffee and an assortment of ice cream and other country treats.
