This page is dedicated to information that will help develop participation in the Preserve America grant program. A committee of sorts has met and is working on the designation of Stevens County as a Preserve America Community and on an overall plan to preserve and promote our historical assets. We are the Stevens County Historical Preservation Committee (SCHPC). If you have heard of this effort and are not in Stevens County, you need to know that we do not intend to be exclusive, the grant program is set up to only fund governments and even then not coalitions of governments. We hope to establish Stevens County as a Preserve America Community and should that fail, we have some other fall-back positions. The Federal program strongly suggests that communities coordinate their efforts through the Washington State Historical Preservation Office which is the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP). That office has its own program of involving communities in preservation of historic buildings through a community, the Certified Local Government (CLG) Program. We have also established liaisons with that office as well as the Spokane Tribe of Indians, the National Park Service, The Colville National Forest and the Little Pend Oreille Wildlife Refuge. Several cities and the Heritage Network are also involved (See the committee page for a complete list). We intend to have on this site information about the ongoing effort and parts of our history that need preservation. Activities are evolving daily, so stay in touch. Check out the Web Log (blog) for the latest. Mission Statement (Provisional) The Stevens County Historical Preservation Committee is a coalition of representatives of local historical societies, museums, genealogists, local, state and federal government agencies and tribes committed to the preservation and enhancement of historical resources in Stevens County. We work together to preserve our cultural heritage, educate our selves, our children and others about the cultural significance of our area, promote tourism, provide tools to integrate, interpret and share our history and to create a sustainable base of support that will pass this heritage on to future generations. |
